Welcome to the Upper Murrumbidgee Waterwatch monitoring site
About this site
This site houses the database for Waterwatch projects in the Upper Murrumbidgee and ACT, including the Yass, Lake George, Ginninderra, Molonglo, and Southern ACT sub-catchments and the Cooma Region.
The database provides the greater Canberra community with an excellent long-term indication of the condition of their waterways, and valuable information to improve the management of the waterways and their catchments.
The Waterwatch program is a partnership between the ACT government and a large number of amazing volunteer community groups and individuals who set aside a small amount of time each month to collect a range of water quality data at over 320 sites established throughout the region.
Information collected by volunteers contributes to our understanding of the health of the catchments and is a way of monitoring the effects of changes in land management practices.
Data is collected using standard equipment and methods and volunteers are trained in their use to ensure that results are consistent and comparable.
Current survey projects include:
- Water quality monitoring - physical and chemical parameters and conspicuous algae observations
- Macro-invertebrate surveys - identifying and counting water-bugs (a great activity for kids!)
- Rapid assessment of riparian condition (RARC) - looking at the condition of the riparian (stream) environments
- Frogwatch surveys - identifying and counting frogs by sight and sound
- Platypus surveys - Counting sightings of platypus
Please take the time to discover what volunteers are doing to monitor the health of our catchments.
If you would like to GET INVOLVED, please follow the above links to contact the catchment coordinator in your sub-catchment of interest.
